Well folks…you now know where to find us when it’s time for retirement! Lago di Como was unbelievable. We arrived in Varenna Friday afternoon, after a somewhat difficult car ride through Italian switch backs, Seren barfing, me feeling car sick and nearly tossing and all of us tired & hungry. Notta-so-funna.
But…once we stepped out of the car and took a breath of the cool, crisp lake air, it all melted away, of course. I definitely will not be able to eloquently express to you how breathtaking everything was - without sounding like some trashy romance novel…but that is honestly, the only way I will be able to describe the sights, sounds and feelings we experienced the whole weekend. After dropping our luggage off, we took a stroll through the property and were left speechless time and time again with ridiculous views of the sun setting over Lake Como, the snow-capped Swiss Alps, the beautiful olive tree grove in our front yard, the smell of fresh sage & thyme bushes growing at our doorstep and the panoramic views of the towns below. Steve & I could barely peel our eyes away from the views to look at each other, but when we did, all we could manage to do was smile and laugh in disbelief.
Saturday, we walked into the quaint town of Vezio and hiked up to the ruined castle, where we were greeted by large falcons that the owners breed. This village dates back to the 6th century and remains a small community of about 20 families, many of whom live here all their days and are entombed in the cemetery right in the center of town. We walked around the fortress, soaking in the warm sun and continuing to be amazed by the views overlooking Lake Como. On our way back home, we stopped in on one of only two restaurants in the village and had a delicious meal of caprese salad, local meats & cheeses, followed by the main course of local white perch placed over the creamiest risotto I’ve ever had, accompanied with a liter (yes, a liter) of crisp white wine and ending with a bowl of melt-in-your-mouth panna cotta drizzled with chocolate. We then rolled each other home.
Sunday we drove down to lake level, into the town of Varenna and walked along its edge. The path along the lake is scattered with small shops that sell the silk that Como is famous for, as well some five-star restaurants, gelaterias, boat moorings and amazing villas with private gardens adjacent to the water’s edge. We had some more delicious local food and then headed back up to our house for another walk through the property and turned in for the night….ending a wonderful weekend.
Hope you are all well! Glad you are enjoying the blog and can share in the experience with us….it has been incredible. Tanti baci – S & T

Seren's Italian name is 'piccolo pinguini', little penguin. She is also referred to many around town as 'bella bambina'.
