Castello Visconteo

Steve has returned to work after a nice break in Bologna and continues to enjoy working with Dr. Priori and her staff. He seems to be really interested in the research and the opportunities to continue with it back in NYC. It’s nice to see him genuinely excited about the work and being involved in it during its inception. He has been joking around with Dr. Priori saying that he doesn’t want to leave her clinic (which runs extremely well) to return to the hectic and disorganized setting that NYU can often times be. She told him that he could very well become like the last Belgium fellow that studied with her- his wife & four kids stayed here for a year and a half and were working on their fifth!! Uh, *NO* on the four kids, but I could definitely stick around a while longer!

Seren and I have been up to our usual weekly activities. Since it was gorgeous outside, we took a walk through the park and then sat in the Piazza Vittorio for a panini and cappuccino. It’s nice because Seren has reached the age where she is now social and seeks the attention of strangers, which then sparks up some conversation and gives me the opportunity to practice my poor Italian. Afterwards, we went up to the civic museum within Castello Visconteo and checked out the archeological and art exhibits there. Most of the pieces in their archeological collection were found right here in Pavia, ranging from the 8th to the 19th century. The castle architecture itself was extraordinary. It was built in 1360 and used as a residence, before parts of it were destroyed in the Battle of Pavia and is now home to several museums. The best part of our visit was the fact that Seren and I were the only visitors, so an attendant had to open up these enormous vaults full of art, one by one and allowed us to roam the large wings of the castle alone. It was surreal, looking at all the ancient artifacts and beautiful art in such silence and solitude, even Seren was eerily quiet…an experience I will never forget.

On our way home, we stopped off at a children’s park and Seren rode a few of the rides there. She was thrilled to be at the park…or maybe she was just happy to be done with the museum. She’s now tucked away, soundly sleeping. Steve is out for some drinks with co-workers and I’m having some tea & biscotti and waiting for my gelato that he should be picking up for me on the way home…if he remembers…he better remember…maybe I’ll text him later.

Buona Sera!
